Hi Prajwal, firstly I wanted to thank you for such a comprehensive guide, it’s great for someone like me who had no idea where to start. I’m intending on setting it up to manage an internet cafe (under 30 PC’s) and was just wondering if your guide would be applicable to the 2016 version of MSC as well?
For current branch I have published separate guide and you can get them here – https://www.prajwaldesai.com/sccm-current-branch-guides/
Thank you very much good sir! 🙂
I am unable to download the PDF’s, is there any other methods in obtaining them?

Excellent sir
By far one of the most extensive and easy guides to follow. You are an asset to SCCM community. Great job man.
Thanks Manish
First of all, thanks for your training materials that I used about 2-3 years ago to learn SCCM 2012 installation and configurations. Though, I had very limited practiced knowledge about SCCM 2007. Never got indept into troubleshooting clients than just using it for limited patching and using for software deployment in my extensive LAB projects.
Now, I am facing some REAL issues on some of my Enterprise Servers not receiving updates. Most of these 700 server do receive regular security updates, but I constatly face the issue of about 30-40 servers failing to receive these updates.
I have tried so many options of updating, uninstall and re-installing these clients, check group policies, forcing the clients to receive updates from Software Centers with no success. I tested these servers can confirme that these CLIENTS are communicating with Software Centers – the fact is SCCM can actually be used to install some pushed software to these servers, yet, they failed to receive security updates.
What my supervisor suspected (Not SCCM) guy feel that there are certain required patches as foundation for these servers that are MISSING hence the failed patches. We approached the local SCCM teams and they seem not to know what the issue was.
My main question is – is there anyway we can use SCCM tools to find out the foundation patches that are missing on these servers?
Please your assistance will be highly appreciated
Franklin
Hi Franklin,
You need to check the client log files to identify the exact root cause of issue. Check WUAhandler.log, updatesdeployment.log, locationservices.log, CAS.log few other logs to identify the cause of patch failure.
Hi Prajwal,
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I am currently working for vulnerability management project and this blog is very helpfull for me.

Hi Prajwal,
I just want to thank you for all your work. It would be a great help if you can guide me on how to include licence key into drive mapper application that I have created using sccm.
Thanks for your help
Have you found what ways app can be activated ?. If the app gets activated by pasting the key file in installation folder (like Winrar), the solution becomes simple.
Thanks Prajwal. Excellent documents.
Thanks Manju.

Ya sure, that will be published soon.
Hi Prajwal, I am following above steps, But for SCCM I am using windows server 2016, So will be there any configuration issue will come?
And can we create the Win10 boot image using “Capturing Win7” guide?
There should be no issues however if you have upgraded your SCCM, check the OS requirements once. The answer to second question is Yes.
This is one the best guides that I have seen so far. Neat and crisp, i had gone through technet documentation first but it was so confusing. I could easily deploy SCCM using your articles. Great blog and keep sharing valuable stuff.

Hello Prajwal,
I am using SCCM 2012 R2 on my environment to patch 17 of my windows 2012R2 Servers which include 3 Hyper-V + 2 Physical + 12 VM servers.Till Dec 2017 Software Updates feature was working well.
When Jan 2018 Software Updates downloaded into Software Library. It shows only 4 VM of Windows 2012 R2 servers required the updates. All other Servers shows that updates are Not required when I run the report.
Also tried to deploy the updates on all servers but it installed on only 4 servers and shows 100% compliance status for all the servers.
But when I download the updates and manually install them on servers which shows as not required, update get installed successfully.
I have check all the log files related to Software Updates on Servers as well as client but found no errors.
Could you please suggest me the solution on it ???
Thanks and Regards

Hi Prajwal,
Thanks for the step by step installation of SSCM. I have below query for you and I hope you will able to help me with that.
What will be appx pricing for SSCM without endpoint?
Can we install Express Edition of SQL server 2012?
Is license model is based on Core?
Do I need some license to manage Workstations or just need to buy server license and can manage n number of workstations?
Pricing and license related question, you can check with MS. Why do you want to use express edition, you can use SQL server.

Should be an issue with security device, firewall, antivirus etc.
I see Server and client patches in All update folder under Software library work space in Conf Mgr console.
I just want to see the Client patches there how can I achieve this?
You can select only client patches and create a separate update group.
Thank you, this is an in depth easy to follow guide, and I’m just playing around with hyper-v 🙂
Can’t understand why SCCM has to use a specific non default SQL Collation, but that’s Micro$oft for you 🙂
That’s a prerequisite and may be MSFT can answer that 🙂

I need urgent help. Faced many issues in SCCM 2012 OSD and finally i have reached a stage which is last point to start the deployment.
Client systems boots with pxe and prompts for password. After entering password below error pops up.
Failed to run task sequence (0x80004005)
This is my PXELogs
Can you attach smsts.log file ?.
Sorry but I don’t see the smstslog file. can you guide me please? thanks
Hello Mr Desai I don’t see the log file smarts.log anywhere in my server. Can you guide please? Do you need a different log fine or information ? please help
You have to enabled command support on boot image. Press F8 during the deployment and you will see the command prompt. You can then grab smsts.log file.
Hi Prajwal,
We have installed SCCM 2012 R2 Server in our environment and deployed the SCCM clients on end systems for software installation and patching purpose.
Later we were facing multiple issues in SCCM so we have decided to reinstall the server.
Now the server having different host name also site code name is also different.
We are now trying to install SCCM client on the end machines which already has client installed with old settings.
On Some of the machines client got installed succesfully and those are updated in SCCM but most of systems are still not updated.
Can you please guide us with the right procedure to be followed in above case.
Thanks and Regards
Makarand Bagwe
In both cases I see the it’s SCCM 2012 R2 that was installed. So what you can do is, instead of uninstalling client agents and installing it again, change the site code of the clients using a script – https://www.prajwaldesai.com/change-site-code-of-configuration-manager-client/
Hello Prajwal,
Thanks for the solution.
With your script we are able change the site code but we have changed the hostname of the SCCM Server also and is it not necessary to change the FSP and MP at client side ?? how we can achieve the same ?
Thanks and Regards
Makarand Bagwe
After installing WSUS did you complete post installation tasks ?.
No. As you mentioned in the document that it should not be done.
Please check the post again, it was updated few days ago.
Ok. And i guess WSUS 3.0 cannot be installed on 2012 server R2. Also tell me that SUSDB is important ? As i continued and didnt get any error in installation.
Hi,
I am stuck at one point, I have installed WSUS as per the documents, but couldn’t able to get the SUSDB in my database directory. Can anyone help me out in this issue.
I believe you have not completed post installation tasks after you installed WSUS.
wt is background process in deployment process

Backend process of deployment ?. You asking about log files ?.
hi i want write sccm certification can any one help with sample paper or notes or pdf
Please post the question in the forums.
Thank you very much for this guide, was extremely useful.
Could you update the OSD deployment to include Windows 10 please?
Maybe also add the part where you have to edit the Task Sequence to allocate 100% of remaining disk space to the partition. Found this to be a bit anyoing that it was not set to that as default.
Yes that will be done.
I have followed your https://www.prajwaldesai.com/sccm-2012-r2-step-by-step-guide/
I have two locations in AD , but those two locations will be on same ip subnet- ( Using NSX solution– vlan travelling). So is there any way i can use boundry or something to point to secondry DP which is near to that location. But not sure how we distinguish those .
You can create boundary and boundary group and have a separate DP server each boundary group.
Hi
I have followed above, but now want to get one solution

Hi Prajwal
Can you let me know if more info required, as i need to get solution for 2nd DP , and need to deploy 2nd DP if there is possible way to achieve that.
I have answered in above comment.
Hi,
I am planning to work out a project regarding SCCM 2012 R2. I just want to know your inputs with my plans given my current scenario. So here it is: Our company has an Head Office with more than 50 employees and we have more than 400 branches located in different places (in a single country only) with ONE employees every branches. I am planning to roll-out SCCM to provide configurations, deployments, application/software patches and upgrades, and OS upgrades remotely to those endpoint clients located in our branches from the head office. I know that, it will not be cost-effective if I’m gonna implement distri point from different locations so I tried to find a more suitable plan for my case. I found out that Azure can be used as “cloud-based distribution point”. So I’m gonna try this in a test environment if this can fit with my scenario. However, I would still love to hear comments/suggestions/recommendations from an expert like you. What do you think could be the best solution for my scenario?
I look forward to hear a feedback from you.
Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Red

Could you do one on best practices on a larger site multi subnet over mpls configuration. 10-20 distribution points multiple secondary sites and one primary site. How should SCCM be configuration?
The company where i work has 60 DP’s across globe. We have just one primary site with distribution point at each site. We do not have secondary site. In sites where there is less bandwidth pull DP will help as the content is pulled from nearest DP or from DP where the connectivity is good.
Hello….I am struggling to figure out the difference between using a – secondary site server or a site system server within the sccm hierarchy. Would you be able help please? Thanks
You can refer this guide – https://www.prajwaldesai.com/sccm-secondary-site-installation/

Thank you in advance.
I don’t think so. May I know what issues are facing wrt links ?.

Thanks for the feedback. I will do that.
Do you have a plan of making similar step-by-step guide for SCOM 2012 R2? I find it very powerful and useful but at the same time more difficult to master. Digging deep into SCCM, SCOM and SCVMM is something I intend to do in forthcoming months along with Microsoft technologies for virtualizing applications and desktops (RDS, VDI, App-V, UE-V …) so anything you have related to these would be very helpful – you said VDI was also subject of your interest.
Hi Bojan, making a step by step guide is not easy and its very time consuming. May I will give a try after few months.
Of course Prajwal, I just wanted to know your plans about possible new guides. Combination of your guides, books, video trainings and forums are great way of learning SCCM 2012 R2 although that applies for every Microsoft technology. Fortunately System Center community is pretty large hence you can find solution for almost any problem.

Hello,
I need to create a prestaged image that I will store on a hard drive for our hardware vendor to have the image already applied on the computers when they arrived to our institution. Then the process will just continue with the rest of the task sequence steps once they arrive onsite. Can someone explain or point me to a written guide on how to accomplish this? Can the prestaged image be set to expire after x amount of time?
Thanks in advance.
Hi everyone,
I have been doing some research about SCCM 2012 features and implementation. However, I could not find a solid answer to the max numbers of:
• Applications that can be deployed to a single collection
• Packages that can be deployed to a single collection
• Total number of overall deployments a computer can receive from various sources?
• Collection inclusions/exclusions and queries inside a single collection under Membership rules.
I will appreciate of your collaborations on this matters.
Thanks Great TUTORIAL. Great dedication
Thank you 🙂
Fantastic work man. Simply awesome.

Hello,
First of all I must thank you very much for all those well details steps on how to get SCCM 2012 installed. I have been looking for some good documentation since a few months and this is a life saver!!
My question: I am trying to install SCCM 2012 on Windows server 2008 R2 and so far all seems to be good until I get to the WSUS installation where I need to choose Under the Role services, the Database installation for WSUS. Windows 2008 doesn’t seem offer that option in the Role Wizard. Actually, Windows 2012 offers a Add Role and Feature Wizard, which isn’t the case for windows 2008 where we have to choose between Add Role or Add features.
If I complete the WSUS installation, since I dont see where to point it to any database Instance at the end, there is no SUSDB created in my SQL Server. Can I have some help with this please?
Thank you.
Thank you so much for these guides, Prajwal. They have been invaluable!!!

Thank you so very much for your guides, they were the most straight forward and detailed guides I have found. They answered my questions before I knew to ask them! A very big help.
Thank you M.R. Could you also register to the forums
Hello Prajwal, thank you very much for these guides, it helped me a lot, really. I didn’t thought it will be so hard to configure the SCCM 2012, I thought it was just a simple software, you follow the wizard, and you’re done….turned out it is much more complicated. So thank you, and waiting for CM2016 😀
Thank you Walid.

Hi Parjwal,
Thanks for a detailed explanation with screen shots for installing and configuring SCCM, initially i had some issues but after going through each line of your instructions i was successful in installing and configuring i even was able to push to clients.I am facing an issue in deploying of software only.I tried the method you showed but no luck, can you help me.
Thanks
Kishore
@Kishore – May i know what issue are you facing with software deployment ?.
Hi Prajwal,
I built an application using a MSI file ( Thunderbird 17) but its not showing in the software center in the client system.
Thanks
Kishore
Thanks for the step by step guides. They helped me a lot.
welcome Ramesh.
Hi Prajwal,
I figured out what the issue was, instead of a silent uninstall I tried ‘setup.exe /uninstall Proplus’ & worked like a charm.
I would still like to find out why the silent install did not work. Any help on it will be appreciated.
Hi Shafiq, could you post the same question in forums.
Hi Prajwal,
I started Sccm with your guides and they are really helpful in understanding how things work in sccm. Without your guides I would have given up on sccm.
So far I have installed and configured sccm untill deploying software. (Office 2013). For my life I cannot uninstall M.S Office2013 from software center. I have tried both options silent and normal.
Can you please advice what am I doing wrong and what log file should I look for application deployment.
Thanks,
Shaf
hi any ideas how to create a report that shows recently installed software ? not necessary that it has been deployed but installed by an end user.
i guess this should be under compliance.
I am not sure about the report that shows recently installed software but you can get the report for installed software. Let me see if i can find it out for you.
A quick check – What all roles have you installed on the site server so far ?
Thanks for your response. I have installed and configure the following roles.

Prajwal, do you have series like this for SCOM 2012 R2? You did not give me an answer what could be wrong with uninstallation of Office 2013?
@Bojan – I had posted on SCOM installation long back, currently I have not added any posts on SCOM since long time.
Part 4: I installed WSUS and it says completed successful but, I do not see the WSUS database in SQL. Am I missing something?
@Omar – While installing WSUS what Role Services did you select?
Really Great Work Prajwal, thanks a lot, I’m also Interested for Lync Server, Exchange Server and System Center Family. So good continuation and waiting for other documentation or presentation.
@Aymen – Thank you.
Hi I have attached error shot here , I am getting below error while installing the SCCM 2012r2
Kindly help in this
The server collation acts as the default collation for all system databases that are installed with the instance of SQL Server, and also any newly created user databases.
Mount the SQL DVD and go to path where the setup.exe is located and execute the below command:
Setup.exe /QUIET /ACTION=REBUILDDATABASE /SQLCOLLATION=SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER/SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS=BUILTINAdministrators
Hi Prajwal ,, i hope your good ,, thanks for your help again ..
I have tried the same steps already but its not helping ,,
kindly help me , before we go for this steps (Part 2 : Installing Prerequisites for Configuration Manager 2012 R2)
Need to create user in AD ? (SQL and SCCM ).
MY LAP setup :”
Windows server 2012 R2 – 8 GB RAM – 64 bit – Joined Domain
Note : In my 2008r2 lab, i have created 2 users before go for ” ADSI EDIT ” Attached screenshot
Hi Manoj, you can reinstall the SQL server in your lab setup. Configuration Manager requires a 64-bit version of SQL Server to host the site database and site database must use the following collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. While installing SQL check if the collation is set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.
As you are deploying the SCCM in your lab setup, use an account which is a member of domain admins group. You should use the same account for deploying SCCM. May I know more about your lab setup ?
Hi Prajwal ,,This Manoj from Bangalore ,

Thank you Manoj. Let me know what are the errors that you are facing.
Hello ,
while installing the SCCM 2012 R2,i am getting the error stating ” Configuration manager requires MS SQL Server 2012 with CU2 or Higher”, However i have updated the SQL 2012, still i could not able to proceed further with the installation.
Also i tried with SQL Server 2012 SP2 , but still same, and from the log i could able to see the message ” Cannot detect SMS Type becaoz either site server ,sql server or site server name is empty”.
SQL Ports Configured Properly , and allowed the Named Pipes
Requesting to post about the Role based administration in SCCM 2012 R2
Sure, i will do that.
Prajwal,
Have you seen this problem?
CAS can’t access SMS_CAS & SMS_SITE
I have an open case with Microsoft SCCM 2012 but so far, they haven’t been able to figure it out!
My environment in test (it’s been up & running for 2 months at least):
– Server 2012 R2 Standard
– SCCM 2012 R2 CU1
– SQL 2012 Standard SP1
· 1 CAS
· 1 x Primary
· Remote SQL either on CAS or Primary
From CAS, log-in as SCCM Admin Service Account (as Domain Admins), SCCM Admin Service Account can’t access SMS_CAS & SMS_SITE
Message:
Windows cannot access \sccmcas01SMS_CAS
You do not have permission to access \sccmcas01SMS_CAS. Contact your network administrator to request access.
Windows cannot access \sccmcas01SMS_SITE
You do not have permission to access \sccmcas01SMS_SITE. Contact your network administrator to request access.
BUT from Primary Site: there’s no problem access
\sccmcas01SMS_CAS
\sccmcas01SMS_SITE
And I just stood up my production (3 days ago), haven’t deploy the SCCM client yet just finished setting up boundaries, AD discovery, etc.
The same problem occurs as well.
Did I miss something here? OR new undiscovered bugs either in Windows Server 2012 R2 or SCCM 2012 R2.
I really appreciated any help on this. It’s been one week. Thanks, Reza
Prajwal, have you heard this Adaptiva which helps you in resolving tough challenges such as migration etc? Thanks. I just want to know your opinion.
No I haven’t come across that (links are removed from your comment), there are many such softwares which claim that they can perform migration easily / manage infrastructure better than SCCM, however they all have certain limitations which we will get to know once we purchase the software. So be aware of such things and study the software completely and its limitations.
Thanks.

Hi Prajwal,
I just wanted know is it possible configured 2 SCCM2012 in the same network…? if it is possible please give some suggestion for how to configure.
Yes it is possible to have 2 SCCM environments existing but not in the same network..
You can have 2 SCCM primary site servers in the same domain however make sure that boundaries don’t overlap..
Prajwal,
I’m assuming setting up SCCM 2012 R2 CAS will be the same setup with the Primary Site, right? Hopefully, it would be the case (there’s a need to do so). Thanks.
Do you need the info on prerequisite and setup ?? i can help you on that.
Is it the same SCCM SQL setup with Primary Site? and Also the same SCCM Primary Site setup as well? (basically, I could follow the same instruction like you provided above? Thanks.
Yes Reza it is the same..
Thanks for confirming this. I know I have to pick CAS when I install SCCM 2012 R2 (only when I setup for CAS). I’m setting up SCCM 2012 R2 in Production environment right now.
Another side note: I have SCCM 2012 R2 Primary Site only in test environment (already up and running with CU1) but later on I am going to setup CAS as well. As far as I’m aware that I could do this (new feature of SCCM 2012 R2). Is there anything that I need to know/aware? I’m hoping this is not hard to join newly CAS to existing Primary site in my test environment.
Thanks.
Hi Reza, before you perform the above activity read about prerequisites.
Prajwal, thanks so much for the article. I’ve read this one before, for now, I am not too worry on this. My main focus is to get CAS SCCM 2012 R2, Primary Site to join this CAS in Production environment. That’s my biggest task… (not to mention migrating all the packages, OSD packages, etc.)
When you do the migration take a snapshot of all the steps and document it well.. It will surely help you in future 🙂 best of luck..
I will do that. Thanks. I will let you know the outcome… (crossing all my fingers to go smoothly…)
Excellent guide. Thank you very much.
Thank you. I have also Updated Download links for 61 SCCM 2012 R2 Step by Step Guides. Removed all Technet Links and replaced it with OneDrive links. You can also download all guides at once.
Hello Prajwal,
I gotta say from many different sites for SSCM you can get a quick step by step documentation, but you have basically convert this into “baby steps” literally speaking 😀
Dude you rock!

Hi Prajwal,
This is really a nice site where step by step approach is explained with screenshot. The only thing at present I feel missing is “How to configure,Dowload & deploy software Updates to Interl Severs/Desktop is missing.
Could you please add Another topic & explain in details with screenshot.
Pramod Samal
Ya sure, i will try my best.
Dear Prajwaldesai
Really am saying your document everything super. i have developed more knowledge by you. thank you so much.
Kindly one Information can you provide LYNC 2010 to 2013 migration and Lync 2013 Configuration ?
Sure, i will try my best to do that.
Prajwal, I’ve been following your SCCM 2012 blogs, that’s very good resources! Thanks for helping your fellows SCCM, especially myself. Do they have right click tools for SCCM 2012 R2 yet? Are you going to make a presentation on this one? Thanks.
I see that PS right click tools is available for SCCM 2012
I haven’t tested it on SCCM 2012 R2. Yes I shall create a post on that in few days..
Prajwal, I installed the latest Right Click Tools yesterday and it’s better than the old one. Quick question, I’m looking for a way to deploy SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 console to other people for testing and of course, I have to set the permission as well on what they could see. Do you have a step on how to deploy SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 console? Thanks. BTW, I have my CAS is up and running in my test environment.
Hi Reza, I haven’t updated my SCCM 2012 R2 environment with CU1 yet. I might create a post for it before Microsoft released another CU 🙂
No words to say!! Is there any video tutorials?
Thank you Sridatta, once I finish posting all the guides I will post the video tuts..
I have the Youtube Channel, you can subscribe to it.
Awesome! Helped me a lot to learn and work with
Thanks
Many authors could learn from the way you have this laid out.
I’m not the type to leave comments, in fact this is the first time I ever have and I’ve been in the IT business for 15 years. Really is a superb layout. Well Done!
