Women’s football starts Thursday at Big West Play

Bakersfield – The California State University Bakersfield women’s soccer team continues a four-game homestand at the main soccer field with competition against CSUN, Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., and Sacramento State , Sunday, September 18 at 1 p.m. The contest with the Matadors will be CSUB’s Big West Conference season opener. The Roadrunners beat CSUN in last season’s final, 2-0, in Northridge, Calif.

Bakersfield is 2-5-0 in the young season, having split two home games a week ago. The ‘Runners came from behind to beat Northern Arizona in the last minute of play, before losing an early morning game to Boise State.

Thursday night’s game is being billed as Fiesta Night and will feature Mari’s Guisados ​​Food Truck, special $5 tickets available at GoRunners.com/Tickets, and $5 specials to kick off the annual Celebration of the Month CSUB’s Latinx heritage. ROADRUNNER QUICK STRIKES…
* Kalea Eichenberger and Throw Zimmer each scored their first career goals in a thrilling win over Northern Arizona on September 9. CSUB scored twice in the second half to beat the Lumberjacks despite a 19-7 loss.

* Regielly Halldorsdottir scored in a loss to Boise State. The goal was his third of the season leading the team and his second of the year from a direct free kick. Halldorsdottir also has one assist this season, for a Bakersfield record seven points.

* Goalkeeper Hollee Hercik made a career-high nine saves against NAU and five more against Boise St.

* Halldorsdottir is tied for second in The Big West with three goals scored this season and ninth in the conference with seven points scored. Karen Flores is tied for sixth in the league with a pair of assists. Halldorsdottir and Zimmer each have a game-winning goal this season, good for second place in the Big West.

* The winner of Zimmer’s match against NAU came in the 90th minute. The count was the last by a CSUB goalscorer since his teammate Nicholas Lebakos struck in overtime (101st minute) to bring down UC Riverside at the end of last season.

* In a talent-packed conference, Flores was chosen as one of the league’s top 11 players heading into the 2022 season. Flores was an offensive spark during the preseason, scoring a goal in each of the exhibition wins Roadrunners. She scored her first regular season goal in a loss to New Mexico.

* CSUB was voted 11th in The Big West pre-season coaching poll. The Roadrunners open their second season in the Big West with this weekend’s contest against CSUN, looking to prove the league’s coaches wrong and with sights of a top 6 at the end of the season. The Big West Conference tournament begins Oct. 30 with a champion designated on Sunday, Nov. 6.

NEXT…
Sunday’s contest with Sacramento State is the team’s final non-conference game of the 2022 campaign. Bakersfield will begin full-time Big West action with a trip to Orange County for dates with Long Beach State and UC Irvine, respectively next Thursday (September 22) and Sunday (September 25). Kick off for both matches is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CSUB’s next home game is September 29 against Cal Poly.
