SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – Orkin, a U.S. company that provides residential and commercial pest control services, released its list of the most rat infested cities on Thursday.
The list, which includes the top 50 cities, is compiled by the number of new rodent treatments performed from September 2020 to September 2021.
Chicago took the top spot for the seventh year in a row, and two California cities make the top five, including a city in the Bay Area.
The top 10 is as follows:
- Los Angeles
- new York
- Washington DC
- San Francisco
- Philadelphia cream
- Cleveland, oh.
The other California cities that made the list were San Diego and Sacramento, in 17th and 29th places.
New to the list were Portland, Maine and Louisville, Kentucky.
Orkin attributes an increase in rodent visibility to the coronavirus pandemic.
The closure of restaurants has forced rodents to find new sources of food. With no food waste to consume, the parasites have often been observed cleaning up new areas.
The presence of rodents has become so important that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published Rodent control tips on how to keep rats and mice away from homes and businesses.
