Ben Lomond resident Michael Lopes recently won two awards at the annual California State Photography Fair.

Lopes, who says he’s been involved in photography over the years, started getting serious about photographing hummingbirds in his garden about six years ago, he said.

The two photos that won awards include an image of a black and white egret that won an award of merit and an image of a surfer at the tip of Steamer Lane lighthouse that won an award of excellence.

The California State Fair presents its photography contest as the largest juried exhibition in the state. The show receives thousands of submissions online and this year two de Lopes were shortlisted.

The award-winning photos are at the Casa Nostra restaurant in Ben Lomond for a two-month exhibition. The egret is framed 40 inches by 30 inches and the surf photo is framed 40 inches by 26 inches. Lopes’ photos can also be viewed and purchased at Luna Sea Gallery in Pescadero and Home by Zinnia in Scotts Valley.
