Are you single, living in California and looking for love?

Unfortunately, you may want to leave the state to find your soul mate. A new study by real estate market firm Zillow released on Friday shows which US cities had the highest single rate for their area. None from California made the cut.

In 2019, about four in ten or 38% of American adults (ages 25-54) were single, meaning neither married nor living with a partner, according to Pew Research Center. This number is up from 29% in 1990.

With the growing number of singles across the country, Zillow has ranked the best destinations in the country to meet other people who are also living single. It ranked the 100 largest cities based on factors such as density of singles in an area, available rental listings, and affordability of renting for singles.

Based on these factors, Zillow has compiled a top 10 list. Wichita, Kansas took the top spot on the list, and four of the top 10 cities are in Texas.

“Remote work has opened up housing opportunities across the country. If not tethered to an office, singles can move to more affordable locations and a vibrant singles scene. Metro areas like Wichita, where your housing dollar stretches farther, are especially attractive at a time when nationwide rents are nearly 16% higher than a year ago.

Methodology

Of the 100 largest US cities analyzed by Zillow, the company used four main variables to compile its top 10.

  • Inventory per single means how many rental ads there are in an area for each person. Places with more inventory for singles scored higher in this category.
  • Share of single people in an area are places that had more single people, according to 2020 US Census Bureau data.
  • Typical rental price for cities that had lower average rental prices ranked higher in the 100.
  • Sharing affordable rental ads reflects market share based on single person incomes, also based on 2020 census data.
