The best and worst cities in 2022 for staycations

Two California cities — San Francisco and San Diego — were in the top 10 best cities for staycations in 2022, while six California cities were ranked among the worst cities for staycations.

With approximately 29% of Americans not planning to travel for leisure in 2022, personal finance website WalletHub today released its report on the best and worst cities in 2022 for vacation.

To identify the best places to stay local, WalletHub compared more than 180 cities across 44 key metrics of a fun-yet-friendly stay. Our dataset ranges from parks per capita to restaurant meal costs to the share of residents vaccinated.

The best against the worst

  • Orlando, Florida has the most zoos and aquariums (per square root of population), 0.0131, or 43.7 times more than New York, the city with the fewest at 0.0003.
  • New York has the most parks (per square root of population), 1.4934, or 21.8 times more than North Las Vegas, Nevada, the city with the fewest at 0.0684.
  • Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has the lowest cost for house cleaning services, $60, five times cheaper than Pearl City, Hawaii, the city with the highest price at $300.
