Los Angeles is one of the longest and shortest city names in the world. Los Angeles is often called LA but its original name was actually “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora Reina de Los Angeles Sobre el Rio Porciuncula”, which translates from Spanish to “The City of Our Lady Queen of Angels on the Porciuncula river “. The city enjoys a mild climate most of the year and has a population of around 4 million. It is the home of Hollywood, where many famous TV shows and movies are produced. The world famous Hollywood sign read “Hollywoodland” when it was created.

In 1892, a large oil field was discovered in the Los Angeles area which is now occupied by Dodger Stadium. In fact, Los Angeles once produced nearly a quarter of the world’s total oil in 1923. The city still sits on one of the the largest oil fields in the country. In 2006, a tar pit was discovered in the town, which contained remains of saber-toothed tigers, giant sloths and even a mammoth.
San Diego is located about 120 miles south of Los Angeles, and it is just the border of Mexico and the United States. San Diego is not only the second largest city in the state of California, but also the eighth largest city in the United States with an estimated population of around 1.4 million. San Diego is a largely agricultural city with over 7,000 farms, many of which produce avocados. San Diego actually produces more avocados than any other city in the United States. San Diego’s economy relies heavily on military and defense projects, international trade, and tourism. Many movies and TV shows have been filmed in San Diego, including The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Paranormal activity, and Top Gun. San Diego is also home to the San Diego Comic-Con International, a high-profile event for comics and other forms of pop culture media.
San jose has a population of just over one million inhabitants and was originally the capital of California where the state has officially obtained a state court in 1850. San Jose is an important technology center, strongly involved in the creation of hardware and software. During the 1990s, the rapid growth and importance of the city in the technology industry have given the reputation the city to be the capital of Silicon Valley. San Jose is currently home to many IT and software companies such as Cisco and Adobe. San Jose is home to one of California’s last remaining Japanese neighborhoods, as well as five Chinatowns.
San Francisco is home to around 875,000 people and is known for its rugged hills, unique architecture, beauty and food. The San Francisco Bay surrounds the water city on three sides, making the city a peninsula. The city is home to many unique and famous landmarks, such as the Coit Tower, Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge. San Francisco is densely populated, being the most densely populated urban center in America after New York. San Francisco is also home to a large Asian American population and an LGBTQ community. Irish coffee is probably an invention of the San Francisco Bay Area. San Francisco was the scene of many significant historical events, such as the drafting and ratification of the United Nations Charter.
Fresno, California in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley. This is one of the main agricultural centers of the United States and around the world. Fresno has a population of about half a million people and is close to several national parks, including Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park. Although most of the major California cities are built on the ocean, Fresno is the largest inland city in California. Fresno was once part of Mexico, being an area of the country originally claimed by Spain, then Mexico after independence. Fresno County ended up joining the United States after the events of the Mexican War in 1846.
Sacramento, California has functioned as the state capital since 1854. It is home to approximately 490,000 people. Sacramento played an important role in the California Gold Rush and functioned as a major distribution center for mail brought in by the Pony Express. The city straddles the American River, and gold was first discovered in the river during the 19th century. Sacramento is known for its theatrical arts program and its museums. Sacramento is home to the oldest public art museum in the western half of the country, the Crocker Art Museum. Famous landmarks in the city include Capital Park, Tower Bridge and Sutter’s Fort. Sacramento’s nickname is “the city of trees,” and the city is said to have more trees per capita than any other city in the world.
Oakland is a major port for California and the West Coast. The city is home to many businesses like Clorox and Dryers. Notable landmarks in the city include the Oakland Museum of California, the East Bay Regional Park District, Lake Merritt, and the Chabot Space and Science Center. Oakland is home to approximately 480,000 people, and the city’s economy is largely dependent on commerce and tourism. The Tribune Tower is located in Oakland. Oakland also has the only natural saltwater lake within the city limits of the United States. It is often claimed that Oakland is also the birthplace of the neologism “hella”.
Bakersfield sits at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley in California. The Bakersfield area is rich in oil and is home to approximately 375,000 people. Bakersfield has spawned its own kind of country music known as the “Bakersfield sound”. This kind of music was launched by musicians like Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Billy Mize. Beyond that, Bakersfield is known for its historic restaurants and museums. The Kern County Museum is located in Bakersfield.
