Athletics begins the season at the Lumberjack Team Challenge

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The CSU Bakersfield women’s indoor track team kicks off the new year with its first meeting Friday (1/21), heading to Northern Arizona University to compete in the Lumberjack Team Challenge.

The matchup will offer the Roadrunners competition against a wide range of area programs and two Big West Conference foes.

Other teams – UNLV, GCU, Southern Utah, San Diego State, Sacramento State, Cal State LA, Dixie State, UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton and the University of Arizona.

“We’ve missed a lot of time and are looking for a benchmark and starting point in NAU,” said Athletics Director, Cross Country Marcia Mansur-Wentworth.

Second year in red shirt Miranda Miller, who currently holds the CSUB pole vault record at 4.0m (13’1.5″), will lead CSUB in its delayed season opener. Miller will be joined in the event by sophomores year in red shirt Alexa Schacher, who ranks third all-time on the school’s pole vault performance list, and Cassidy Neptune.

Second year Julia Stein will travel to Flagstaff, Arizona for the first time this Friday in its indoor debut. She will compete in the 60m hurdles and the 400m. Junior red shirt Jaylen Christensen will join Stein in the 60H looking to better his personal best (9.20) from two seasons ago (NAU; 1/10/20).

Second year in red shirt Jessie Solis is on the CSUB depth chart in shot put with a personal best of 15.26m (50’0.75″) from the 2020 indoor season. She and redshirt junior Kayla Prince and sophomore in red shirt Madison King will launch on Friday.

Fifth year senior Hannah Walker will enter his final season as a Roadrunner at the Lumberjack Team Challenge competing in the high jump with teammate Christensen.

First-year student Nerissa Thompson and second Jahnyl Donaldson-Howden will make their debut in Bakersfield uniforms competing in the 60m and 200m races. Junior red shirt Jordan Retzloff completes the group of sprints going to NAU.

First-year student Neyda Martinez will also compete in her first indoor competition in the 600m race on Friday. She will be the only Roadrunner to compete in a mid-distance event as part of the Lumberjack Challenge.

Sixth year senior Bianca Frausto and freshman in red shirt Alicia Muralles will run the 3000m. Bianca is coming off big 2021 outdoor season personal bests in the 5,000m and 10,000m. She is on the CSUB’s all-time performance lists in both events as well as the 3000m.

Friday’s events begin at 1 p.m. PT with the women’s pole vault.
